In a world where people get super powers based on their worst fear (I.E fear of heights = flying fear of spiders = talking to spiders/control spiders etc.), a child is born with no powers whatsoever. This child, is you.
They call you fearless.
Kids used to tease you with their powers. Like the time Mary tried surprising you with bright flashes of light after she discovered her fear of the dark. Or the time Vince blasted you with a light sonic boom that in reality, could destroy any claustrophobic-inducing spaces.
Sure, it would give you a jump-scare. But that’s it. It doesn’t haunt you or give you any sort of trepidation. You actually have to look up the word “trepidation” because you couldn’t experience it enough to grasp it.
Then one day, your Aunt June got sick. Aunt June, your only family long after your parents passed away. The doctor apologized for bearing the bad news that she got terminal cancer.
For the first time, you wanted to run.
But before you could sit there numbly, the doctor said she got 3 years to live at most.
Something in your heart refuses it.
Three years have passed. Then five. Then ten. Your aunt is emaciated but alive. She would take 8 medications for her chronic pain, looking like a scarecrow in her clothes that used to fit her round figure nicely. It bothered you that she only spent her days staring at the window. But you’re relieved she’s still with you.
You began to noticed that your cat since you were three was now pushing thirty. When cats only live for 16 years. The sweet, elderly couple who you always help with the groceries and the gardening had just celebrated their 110th and 102nd birthday.
But things took a turn when your best friend and love of your life got into a car accident. The paramedics were astounded. He was bleeding too much and too long. Yet he moaned and gasped, delirious from cerebral hypoxia as he mumbled to them to kill him. Weeks after his hospitalization, he confided to you it was one of the most agonizing feeling in his life.
It was strange, knowing too many people that lived beyond expectation. Because none of these people that you love and care about have superpowers based from fear of dying. Especially not your cat.
That’s when it occurred to you. You do have a superpower and it’s based on your only fear.
The fear of losing someone.
If I’m extra sarcastic with you it probably means I’m flirting with you or you really annoy me and I can’t handle your shit
Have fun figuring out which
